Manchester, England – Relegation fears are beginning to grip Manchester United after a disastrous start to life under new manager Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils suffered a third consecutive home league defeat, losing 2-0 to Newcastle United, leaving them just seven points above the drop zone.
Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton within the first 19 minutes put the game beyond United, who have now lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag last month, has come under intense criticism for his rigid adherence to a 3-4-3 formation, a system he employed successfully during his time at Sporting Lisbon. Despite calls for a change in tactics, the Portuguese manager remains defiant.
“You cannot go back, you have to continue to push,” Amorim declared. “We’ve had four training sessions all together, I was brought here because of my idea and I will continue with my idea until the end.”
The timing of this slump could not be worse. United face a daunting trip to runaway league leaders Liverpool on Sunday, followed by an FA Cup clash with Arsenal.
The disparity between the two Manchester clubs is stark. While Liverpool are flying high, having scored 14 goals in their last three league games, United are struggling to create chances and have drawn blanks in four of their last six matches.
Amorim’s stubbornness is a major concern for United fans. The team lacks confidence and creativity, and the manager’s refusal to adapt his tactics could prove to be his undoing.
