Kawempe North Member of Parliament and National Unity Platform (NUP) stalwart Muhammad Ssegirinya has passed away. Known for his spirited political activism, Ssegirinya, popularly referred to as “Mr. Update,” died on Thursday morning after battling illness for nearly two years.

Born in Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District, Ssegirinya rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent voice for the marginalized. Throughout his career, he was known for his unwavering focus on grassroots issues, including poverty alleviation, healthcare, and education.

Ssegirinya’s political journey began as a local councillor and later led him to represent Kawempe North in the Ugandan Parliament. He quickly made a name for himself with his unconventional approach to serving his community. During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, he established a makeshift hospital, going above and beyond the usual duties of a parliamentarian to ensure the health and welfare of his constituents. His acts of kindness were not just charitable—they were statements of policy, aiming to fill gaps in government services.

His sudden death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s political landscape. Tributes have poured in on social media, particularly from supporters, colleagues, and even critics, acknowledging his significant impact on both his community and Ugandan politics. While the exact cause of his death has not been officially disclosed, it is understood that Ssegirinya had been struggling with health issues, particularly after enduring alleged torture and receiving subsequent treatment abroad following his arrest.

The loss of Muhammad Ssegirinya is not just a personal tragedy for his family and friends; it is a substantial blow to Ugandan politics. His voice was one of the few consistently advocating for the underrepresented, especially the urban poor communities of Kampala.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life’s work—his dedication to his people, his advocacy, and his indomitable spirit to make a difference. He leaves behind a powerful legacy of service and connection with his constituents, and will be remembered not only as a parliamentarian but as a symbol of resilience and hope for many.
