Sarah Alaka, who completed an Administrative Law course from Makerere University Mbale Centre, has passed away. She was serving in Kumi District as the acting sub-county chief at the time of her death. According to public records, she was in her late forties.
Madam Sarah Alaka was the wife of former Kumi District LCV Chairman Mr. Orot Ismail, who also served as the Member of Parliament for Kanyumunyu Constituency in Kumi.
Steven Masiga told this publication that Sarah completed her Administrative Law Officers’ course at Makerere University Mbale Centre about three years ago. Upon graduation, she was immediately promoted to acting sub-county chief in her area, where she had previously served as a parish chief.
“We salute her efforts posthumously for mobilizing local government staff in Teso, particularly in Kumi District, to pursue studies in administrative law,” said Masiga. “As an institution, we are deeply saddened by her untimely demise.”
Masiga also recalled her humor and openness during her application process:
“She once came into the office and joked, ‘Sir, you look a little older than how you appear in the newspapers and on TV. Please use another photo in your articles,’” he said. “That was Sarah—open-minded and warm. She also got along well with her peers during the course.”
Her 2022 Administrative Law cohort, including Head Teacher Milly Namataka of Mbale Police Primary School and Deputy Head Teacher Irene Madaya of the same school, expressed sadness over her passing.
Madam Juliet Wakhoooli, Head Teacher of North Primary School in Mbale, will lead a delegation of former Administrative Law classmates to attend the burial.
Makerere University has called on all its former learners from the Teso region to attend the burial in solidarity.
