Uganda’s Voters Register Display Nears Deadline as NUP Supporters Call 2026 Elections a ‘Protest Vote’

As Uganda prepares for the highly anticipated 2025–2026 General Elections, the country is witnessing heightened political energy and public scrutiny. At the heart of this preparation is the National Voters Register Display exercise, which officially closes on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

Launched on April 25, 2025, the display exercise is being conducted by the Electoral Commission in line with Section 26 of the Electoral Commission Act (Cap 176). It aims to give Ugandan citizens the opportunity to verify their voter details, correct any errors, and raise objections to ineligible entries. This process plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the national electoral roll.

While the Electoral Commission has called for maximum public participation, opposition supporters, particularly those aligned with the National Unity Platform (NUP), have labeled the upcoming elections as a “Protest Vote.” Many within the NUP claim that their participation in the 2026 polls will be a deliberate act of resistance against what they perceive as years of electoral injustice and political marginalization.

Political analysts note that this framing of the election could significantly energize opposition turnout, especially among younger, urban voters who feel disillusioned by previous outcomes. Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has assured the public of its neutrality and commitment to conducting a free and fair electoral process.

With just days left before the register display exercise concludes, eligible voters are being urged to visit designated display centers in their areas to confirm their registration status. This civic duty not only guarantees the right to vote but also plays a vital role in upholding the democratic process.

As the countdown to 2026 begins, all eyes remain on Uganda’s electoral roadmap—one that could shape the nation’s political future for years to come.
