Former Flying Squad Boss Nixon Agasirwe Hires New Lawyer in Murder Case

Former Flying Squad commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nixon Agasirwe Karuhanga, has hired a new senior city lawyer after being unexpectedly abandoned by his former counsel, Ahmed Kalule. The change in legal representation comes at a critical stage, as Agasirwe battles murder charges that could attract the death penalty if he is found guilty.

Sources reveal that counsel Kalule pulled out of the case without giving a satisfactory explanation, leaving Agasirwe to quickly seek alternative legal representation. His new lawyer, whose name has not yet been officially confirmed in court records, is expected to take charge of his defense as hearings proceed.

Agasirwe, who previously headed the notorious Flying Squad Unit of the Uganda Police Force, faces accusations connected to the murder of former state prosecutor Joan Kagezi, who was gunned down in 2015 in Kiwatule, Kampala. The late Kagezi was at the time handling high-profile terrorism cases, including the trial of suspects in the 2010 Kampala bombings.

In a dramatic twist during recent court proceedings, Agasirwe’s co-accused, Minana, directly implicated him and a senior Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) general, claiming that the two were the ones who sent him to carry out the killing. This allegation has added fresh weight to an already complex case that continues to draw public attention.

Legal analysts note that the decision by Agasirwe to secure a new senior lawyer underscores the seriousness of the charges he is facing. With the prosecution led by the outgoing Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the case is likely to move with renewed urgency.

As the trial progresses, the stakes remain high—not only for Agasirwe and his co-accused but also for Uganda’s justice system, which faces increasing scrutiny on how it handles cases involving powerful security officers and unresolved political assassinations.
