Police in Bugweri District are investigating a violent incident in which the Officer in Charge of Bugweri Police Station, Robert Nagoro, had part of his ear bitten off by a suspect during an Easter night operation targeting a suspected criminal gang.
The suspect, identified as Jamil Mulondo, was among 18 individuals arrested in an operation mounted following an outcry from residents of Idudi Town Council over a surge in theft cases. According to Busoga East regional police spokesperson Michael Kasadha, Mulondo was armed with a machete and attempted to attack the officer during the arrest.
Police say Nagoro managed to evade the attempted machete attack and successfully restrained the suspect. However, in the course of the struggle, Mulondo turned on the officer and bit off part of his left ear, causing serious injury.
“It is true that the OC Station at Bugweri had part of his ear bitten off by a suspect during the operation,” Kasadha confirmed, adding that the officer is receiving medical attention.
Authorities revealed that the operation led to the recovery of seven suspected stolen mobile phones and a television set believed to have been taken during a series of thefts in the area.
Mulondo now faces an additional charge of attempted murder, while his accomplices are being processed on theft-related charges. Police have also preferred defilement charges against two suspects who were found in the company of underage girls during the operation.
The suspects have been identified as Tarvin Kirunda, Aziz Magumba, Kenneth Lwayi, Hamidu Kisambira, Aaron Kasadha, Jackson Sajabi, Salim Kaziba, Abasi Kisambira, Kuzaifa Mudasi, Binasali Mudasi, Rahim Tenywa, Twahiri Muwaya, Sudaisi Kisambira, Grace Mulongo, Aminsi Walyaka, Rahim Matende, Aramanzan Musobya, and Jamada Mulondo.
Police say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to apprehend additional suspects believed to be connected to the theft ring.
