Karamoja, Uganda — The commissioning of the first cement factory in Moroto District, Karamoja Sub-region by President Museveni has attracted the attention of multinationals that have rushed to the region to secure land for investment while targeting the factory.

Last month, President Museveni commissioned a shs 1 trillion Chinese-established cement factory in Nadunget Sub-county in Moroto District.
The factory, which is the first of its kind in Karamoja since time immemorial, will be producing 6,000 tonnes daily in its first phase.

While commissioning the factory, President Museveni said establishment of domestic clinker factory will save Uganda approximately USD 260 million previously spent on imports of clinker, a key raw material in cement production.

The President hailed the Chinese investors for their continued commitment, describing it as reliable.

This publication has witnessed new faces of investors and other business companies touring the region, while others are looking for land to buy and set up investments.

Pascal Longole, one of the locals in Moroto, said every day there are many different faces of visitors entering Moroto, with many of them looking for land to buy and invest.

“Moroto is now becoming a hot cake, and we are ready for the development,” he said.

John Nangiro, one of the elders in Nadunget, said the price of land in Moroto especially along the highway has skyrocketed, yet the land in Karamoja used to be as cheap as 13,000 in those days.

“Karamoja is now open; it’s not like those years when people did not even want to step in Karamoja due to insecurity. As we speak right now, Karamoja is more peaceful than Kampala,” he said.
