Former Student Arrested Over Suspected Dormitory Arson at Butogora Trinity College in Kanungu

KANUNGU, Uganda – Police in Kanungu District have arrested a former student of Butogora Trinity College on suspicion of setting fire to the school’s boys’ hostel, causing extensive destruction of property.

The suspect is currently being held at Butogora Police Station as investigations into the Monday night incident continue.

According to the head teacher, Wens Muhwezi, the fire broke out at around 9:00 p.m. and quickly engulfed the boys’ hostel, reducing students’ belongings and personal property to ashes.

Muhwezi said the hostel was completely destroyed by the blaze, resulting in significant losses for both the students and the school.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the students were attending their evening prep classes when the fire started.

“The boys were in class for night prep at the time of the incident, which prevented what could have been a tragic loss of life,” Muhwezi said.

Police officers responded to the scene and have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s alleged involvement.

Authorities are currently compiling an official report as inquiries continue.

The incident has left students, parents, and school administrators counting losses, while residents have called for thorough investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
