KAMPALA – Police have recovered more than 300 suspected stolen mobile phones and arrested 30 suspects during an intelligence-led operation at Cooper Complex in Kampala’s Central Business District.
The operation was conducted after security agencies received information indicating that the building had become a centre for the theft and illegal sale of suspected stolen mobile phones.
According to the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the raid was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in mobile phone theft and the trade of stolen property.
“The operation was intelligence-led following information that Cooper Complex had become a hub for individuals involved in the theft and sale of suspected stolen mobile phones. During the operation, we recovered over 300 suspected stolen mobile phones and arrested 30 suspects who are currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police said the recovered phones have been secured as detectives begin the process of verifying ownership and tracing the rightful owners.
The suspects are expected to record statements as investigators gather evidence to determine the appropriate charges against those found culpable.
Owoyesigyire said the operation forms part of a wider campaign by the Uganda Police Force to fight mobile phone theft, robbery and the illegal resale of stolen property across Kampala and other parts of the country.
“The recovered phones have been secured pending verification of ownership. The suspects will be charged and prosecuted where sufficient evidence exists as we continue our efforts to combat mobile phone theft and the illicit trade in suspected stolen property,” he said.
Police have appealed to members of the public who recently lost their mobile phones to report to the nearest police station and provide proof of ownership to help in the identification and recovery process.
Authorities said similar operations targeting criminal networks involved in phone theft and the sale of stolen items will continue as investigations into the Cooper Complex operation proceed.
