Two university students, Innocent Wasande and Emmanuel Mwijukye, have been taken into custody by the police on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman on Independence Day. The victim, known only as Cindy, alleges that she was sedated and repeatedly raped by the two individuals.

Wasande is enrolled at Makerere University, while Mwijukye is a student at Kampala International University’s western campus. The alleged assault occurred after the suspects reportedly lured Cindy into a bar in Nakulabye, Lubaga Division, located in Kampala City.

Cindy recounted that she had left her residence and business in the Kabawo zone of Lubaga Division at approximately 7 p.m. She then ventured to Nakulabye for leisure, where the suspects initiated contact with her. She stated that she had no reason to suspect their intentions to harm her.

“I didn’t have any companions with me. I went alone, and I encountered two young men who attempted to befriend me. I don’t know what they did, and I don’t recall how I was removed from the bar, leading to the assault, and ultimately being transported to a medical facility,” Cindy reportedly stated.

Detectives from the Old Kampala police disclosed that a Good Samaritan had rescued Cindy after witnessing the men taking turns to sexually assault her. This alert individual immediately sought help from others nearby, resulting in the apprehension of the two students.

“It appears that Cindy was sedated while inside the bar, and these students managed to discreetly remove her from the premises without drawing the attention of the bar’s staff. They entered the bar with the intent of targeting a lone female victim to satisfy their desires,” commented the detectives.

Cindy, who operates a mobile money shop, often spends her evenings in Nakulabye after concluding her work. Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, urged bar management to exercise heightened vigilance. He recommended that bars closely monitor patrons entering alone and take steps to determine whether individuals assisting them are related while also assessing the well-being of customers.

This incident is not the first of its kind, as similar cases of individuals being sedated, assaulted, or robbed inside bars have occurred in areas like Kawempe Tula, Kanyanya, Mpeleerwe, and Makindye Salama Road.
