The Chinese embassy in Kenya has released a travel advisory, cautioning its citizens about heightened security concerns in certain parts of Kenya. The advisory urges Chinese nationals to exercise vigilance when visiting regions like Mandera, Wajir, Lamu, Garissa, and other Kenyan towns. Additionally, it advises against traveling to areas with a high concentration of foreigners and crowded places.
The embassy’s statement mentioned the growing uncertainty in Kenya’s domestic security due to escalating global issues. The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Kenya emphasized the importance of monitoring local social security conditions, taking safety precautions, avoiding areas where foreign tourists congregate, and exercising caution in specific Kenyan border areas, including Mandera County, Wajir County, Garissa County, Lamu County.
Chinese citizens in Kenya are also encouraged to promptly contact the police and reach out to the Chinese Embassy in Kenya or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Global Consular Protection and Service Emergency Call Center in case of an emergency.
This advisory marks a departure from China’s typical practice, as it generally refrains from issuing warnings to its citizens visiting Kenya. The statement follows a recent travel advisory issued by the US Embassy in Kenya, which urged its citizens to steer clear of specific areas in Nairobi due to heightened terrorist threats. The US advisory emphasized the need for vigilance in locations popular among tourists and foreigners, security plan review, and heightened situational awareness, cautioning that terrorist groups might strike with little or no warning at various public places.
