Democratic Front (DF) President and Nyendo-Mukungwe Member of Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, has issued a strong warning to opposition parties ahead of the 2026 general elections. He believes that without serious electoral reforms, any hopes of unseating President Yoweri Museveni remain slim.
Speaking during an interview on NBS TV, Mpuuga expressed deep frustration that his three-year push for constitutional and electoral changes has been largely ignored, both by the government and some members of the opposition.
He specifically pointed out divisions within the opposition, criticizing his former party—the National Unity Platform (NUP) and its leader Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) for dismissing his calls for reform. According to Mpuuga, sidelining these efforts is as good as aiding the ruling regime, since no fair contest can be held under the current conditions.
“Museveni appoints the Electoral Commission, commands the military—even during elections. If we don’t push for real change, we’re setting ourselves up for another loss,” Mpuuga said.
The DF leader stressed that without a united front and a demand for transparency, the opposition risks walking into an election that is already tilted in favor of the incumbent.
As the 2026 elections draw closer, Mpuuga is urging all political actors to put egos aside and rally around the urgent need for reform, warning that time is quickly running out.
