Ssegona Stays with NUP, Ends Defection Rumors To Mathias Mpuuga’s Camp

Veteran Member of Parliament Medard Lubega Sseggona has reaffirmed his loyalty to the National Unity Platform (NUP) by officially submitting his nomination forms, ending widespread speculation about a potential defection to the Democratic Alliance (DA), a political party associated with his long-time ally, Mathias Mpuuga.

In recent weeks, there had been mounting speculation that Sseggona, known for his legal acumen and independent thinking, was considering a shift to DA—a party many political analysts have described as currently struggling to gain national traction. The uncertainty had sparked concern among NUP supporters, particularly as the country moves into a politically charged pre-election period.

However, Sseggona’s decision to stay put is now being seen as a timely endorsement of NUP’s vision and a morale boost for its leadership and base. By choosing to remain in the party he has served for years, Sseggona has not only reaffirmed his commitment to its ideals but has also demonstrated political maturity and strategy.

NUP leaders and senior officials welcomed his decision, describing him as “a respected legal expert and a voice of reason” whose continued presence adds gravitas to the party’s parliamentary team.

“Sseggona’s renewed commitment is a sign of stability and continuity within our ranks,” a party spokesperson stated. “It shows the strength of our shared purpose.”

As Uganda inches closer to the 2026 general elections, Sseggona’s move may influence other undecided party members and independents to rally behind the NUP banner, reinforcing its image as the leading opposition force in the country.
