State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, has visited Busoga University to assess the ongoing renovation works being carried out by the UPDF Engineering Brigade. The inspection followed directives from the Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Muyingo explained that his trip came shortly after a meeting chaired by the First Lady.
“What’s going to happen yesterday, the chair was Mama Janet Kataaha Museveni. After our meeting, which ended late, I was asked to go to Busoga and see, monitor, assess what is going on. That’s how it was. Immediately, I said, I must go to Busoga,” he said.
The renovation works, valued at Shs 3.79 billion, began on 3rd August 2024 but faced a few setbacks before being streamlined under the guidance of the Chief of Defence Forces. The UPDF Engineering Brigade resumed full activity in August this year.
“We are expecting to conclude it by the end of November this year, and early December will be for final inspection and handover,” said one of the project supervisors. “The project has costed 3 billion 795 million, fully funded by the government, and all materials needed to finish the work are already available.”
Dr. Muyingo commended the UPDF team for their quality workmanship and efficiency.
“This is a community of progress. The work that has been done is quite good, and I feel it is value for money. Of course, the auditors will come and tell us after the audit,” he said.
He added that the project is a clear reflection of government’s investment in education and development in the Busoga region.
“In this part of the country, people have always been asking what the NRM has done. At least for now, we can celebrate and say this is one of the things we, as people of Busoga, have achieved,” Muyingo noted.
The Woman MP for Iganga District also welcomed the progress with optimism.
“We are so happy. The works are now at 85%. In two weeks’ time, the National Council for Higher Education will be coming to assess the progress, and I think in a few months, we shall be good to go,” she said.
Once completed, Busoga University will become the first government university in the Busoga sub-region — a milestone that many residents have long awaited.
