Last week, tragedy struck Masese Landing Site in Masese Village, Jinja, as two nonresident children drowned in Lake Victoria. The victims, identified as Fazali Mukungu, 12, and Akisham Wambadde, 10, were enjoying the waters but faced a tragic turn.

Local residents and leaders note that many drowning incidents at Masese involve nonresidents who are unfamiliar with the water’s depth. Joyce Adikiny, a resident, urges authorities to place warning signs to alert visitors about potential danger zones. She emphasizes that nonresidents, unlike locals, may not know safe areas.

Masese Village Defence Secretary, Asadi Magumba, acknowledges the need for danger signs and emphasizes the importance of parental vigilance during the annual December-February holiday.

Francis Magara, another resident, recalls past incidents and highlights that victims often include nonresidents. He suggests that students on fieldwork study tours are also at risk.

In response to the recent drownings, Kiira Region Police Spokesperson James Mubi reports that the duo went swimming without adult supervision. Eyewitnesses recount the tragic sequence, where Mukungu disappeared in the water, prompting Wambadde’s search. Unfortunately, both children did not return, leading to a frantic search.

Warning signs, increased vigilance, and awareness campaigns are suggested measures to prevent future tragedies at Masese Landing Site. The community emphasizes the importance of safeguarding visitors and ensuring that everyone, especially children, is aware of potential risks in the water.
