Today, on May 6, 2024, the High Court in Kampala is set to review a new bail application from Molly Katanga, who stands accused of the killing of her husband, Henry Katanga. Molly has been in detention since February of this year, awaiting trial.
Judge Isaac Muwata is expected to oversee the hearing. Molly’s previous request for bail was denied by the judge on April 9, 2024, who deemed it necessary to defer the decision until July 2, 2024, in the interest of justice.
Background
The case stems from the tragic death of Henry Katanga, a well-known businessman, who sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the left side of his head during an alleged altercation with his wife, Molly, on November 2, 2023, at their residence on Mbuya Chwa II Road.
The prosecution alleges that Molly intentionally killed her husband with malice aforethought at their home in Nakawa division, Kampala city.
According to the indictment, Henry Katanga’s own pistol, with serial number UG1622200061CZ99, was used in the shooting. Forensic examination revealed traces of Molly’s DNA on the pistol’s trigger, indicating her involvement.
Furthermore, analysis of swabs from Molly’s hands tested positive for gunpowder residue, implicating her in the use of the firearm.
The CCTV footage from the scene was reportedly tampered with but remains a crucial piece of evidence for the upcoming trial.
Molly’s Statement
In her statement to the police, Molly claimed to have no recollection of the events leading to the incident. She admitted spending the previous night with her husband but denies any knowledge of the circumstances surrounding his death or her subsequent admission to the International Hospital in Kampala (IHK).
Alleged Prior Concerns
The indictment suggests that Henry Katanga had expressed concerns about his safety to a close relative in the days leading up to his death. He purportedly feared for his life and took measures such as changing his phone password, acquiring a new private telephone line, and limiting his movements in his personal vehicle.
It is alleged that Henry had confided in someone about feeling threatened by Molly and had even discussed drafting a will as a precautionary measure.
Incident Details
On the morning of November 2, 2023, household members heard unusual noises from the couple’s bedroom, prompting concern. Upon investigation, they allegedly heard sounds of a struggle and a subsequent gunshot. Molly reportedly emerged from the bedroom and alerted others to the situation.
Emergency Respons
Following the discovery of Henry Katanga’s body, Molly, accompanied by others, rushed him to Bugolobi Medical Centre and later to IHK for medical attention.
The hearing today marks a significant step in the legal proceedings surrounding Molly Katanga’s case, as she seeks bail while awaiting trial for the death of her husband, Henry Katanga.
