15 lives were lost in two separate crashes on the Iganga-Jinja road in Eastern Uganda on Friday. The incidents occurred just hours apart, leaving families and communities in shock and mourning.

The first crash, which took place at Musita trading center along the Iganga-Jinja road in Mayuge District, unfolded on Friday night at 11:45 pm. It involved a taxi with the registration number UBE 939H. The taxi, speeding from the direction of Kampala, collided with a stationary truck bearing the registration number RS 603 Q. The truck had come to a halt due to a mechanical issue. Tragically, four people lost their lives on the scene, and five more succumbed to their injuries while being transported to Iganga-Nakavule Hospital. The reckless driving of the taxi was identified as the primary cause of the crash.

Among the victims were Rachel Mirembe, the eastern coordinator for NIC insurance company, and her assistant, Fida Nangobi. The rest of the deceased were men, according to information provided by the police. This first crash claimed a total of nine lives and left six individuals seriously injured and hospitalized.

Just a short time later, a second crash occurred on the same road, resulting in the loss of six more lives, including that of an infant. The circumstances surrounding this second tragic incident are currently under investigation by police in the Busoga Sub-region.

This heart-wrenching sequence of events has prompted a thorough examination of road safety and the need for preventive measures on the Iganga-Jinja road. The local authorities and the community are left in mourning, emphasizing the importance of taking measures to avoid such devastating accidents in the future.
