The Uganda Police Force has successfully recovered a seven-day-old infant, Alyano Gladys, who was abducted from her mother, Mamusena Miriam, on August 6, 2024. The rescue operation was conducted by the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala.
Initial investigations indicate that the abduction was orchestrated by a suspect named Akello Monica, in collaboration with a local leader, Oswal John Elephant. Akello allegedly deceived pregnant women and new mothers by promising financial support from a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
The scheme involved Akello inviting mothers to provide a birth certificate to receive the promised aid. Akello separated Mamusena Miriam from other women and instructed her to obtain the certificate. While supposedly helping with the paperwork, Akello and Miriam used separate motorbikes, with Akello offering to carry the infant. However, Akello disappeared with the baby soon after.
Through persistent investigative work, the police apprehended Akello on August 14, 2024, in Mulimila, Kamwokya Nakawa Division. During questioning, Akello admitted to abducting the infant to deceive her husband, who had been pressuring her to have a child. Akello claimed to have been feeding the baby with bottled milk since the abduction.
In addition to Akello, three suspects are currently in custody, including Akoli Bena, the victim’s sister. Bena is accused of aiding Akello by identifying the child and assuring the suspect that Miriam would be unable to properly care for the baby due to financial constraints.
The infant, Alyano Gladys, has been safely returned to her mother and is now awaiting a medical examination. The police will provide further updates as more details emerge.
