The Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested 25 suspects accused of violently snatching mobile phones from motorists and passengers stuck in traffic along the Northern Bypass.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the suspects were arrested during an operation conducted on Thursday, 5 December 2025, around the Double Q stretch, a hotspot for roadway thefts.

“We conducted a targeted operation after receiving multiple complaints from road users about gangs taking advantage of heavy traffic to snatch phones,” Owoyesigyire said. “Our officers arrested 25 individuals who were caught in the act.”

Police also impounded eight motorcycles allegedly used by the suspects to execute the thefts and escape through congested lanes.

Owoyesigyire noted that several eyewitnesses have already recorded statements, and investigators have secured video footage showing the suspects in action. All the arrested individuals are currently detained at Nateete Police Division as inquiries continue.

“We have clear evidence to support prosecution,” he added. “The public should be assured that deployments during traffic peak hours will continue, especially as we enter the festive season.”

Police encouraged motorists to remain vigilant and thanked the public for cooperating with authorities.

“We appreciate the vigilance and timely reporting from the public,” Owoyesigyire said. “Your cooperation is helping us keep the roads safer.”
