RUBIRIZI, Uganda — The Electoral Commission in Rubirizi District has issued a stern warning to individuals spreading false information regarding the nomination and voting dates for the upcoming LC1 and LC2 elections.
Mr. Twinomujuni Nickolas, the Returning Officer for Rubirizi District, cautioned the public against circulating unverified election details, emphasizing that official nomination and polling dates have not yet been released.
“Anyone found spreading false information about the LC1 and LC2 elections will face punishment and possible court charges,” Mr. Nickolas warned.
According to the Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, the LC1 elections are scheduled to take place between March and April 2026. However, the Electoral Commission is still finalizing detailed polling dates and operational guidelines, which will be officially communicated through authorized channels.
Mr. Nickolas urged residents of Rubirizi to remain calm and patient, assuring them that the Commission is fully prepared to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections.
He confirmed that the elections will be conducted using the traditional lining-up method across 293 villages in Rubirizi District, as part of the broader exercise expected to cover approximately 70,000 villages nationwide.
The Returning Officer further emphasized that the Commission is taking misinformation seriously and will take action against individuals who deliberately mislead the public.
“We urge citizens to stay informed through official Electoral Commission communication channels and avoid relying on rumors circulating on social media or in public gatherings,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tumwesigye Mangara, an LC1 aspirant for Kikuba Village in Ndekye Ward, expressed readiness to contest in the forthcoming elections. He encouraged voters to actively participate and elect honest and hardworking leaders.
Mangara, however, raised concerns about potential low voter turnout due to the lining-up voting method. He appealed to the Electoral Commission to consider using ballot papers instead, arguing that it could increase public confidence and participation.
As preparations continue, electoral officials are calling on residents across Rubirizi District to verify information before sharing it and to await official announcements regarding nomination and voting dates.
