DOKOLO, UGANDA – In a bold demonstration of community oversight in education, parents of Oyirogole Primary School in Kangai Subcounty have taken decisive action to address falling academic standards by dismissing headteacher Peter Abac with immediate effect.

The unprecedented move, which saw Abac handed over to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Dokolo District, has been hailed by local leaders as a wake-up call for government employees who neglect their duties.

Following a heated meeting held at the school yesterday, attended by parents and local leaders, deputy headteacher Sam Acai was appointed as interim headteacher pending the district’s deployment of a permanent replacement.

The parents’ action was triggered by a formal letter dated 15 February 2026, outlining serious concerns about Abac’s conduct. According to the petition, the dismissed headteacher was described as “difficult to work with,” having allegedly refused to hold Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings, carried a panga and bows & arrows on his person, allowed his animals to roam freely within school premises, and consistently ignored parental concerns.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that Abac was prevented from entering the school office but pleaded for time to prepare his departure, assuring parents he would not interfere with the school administration.

Fred Lawrence Otim, Kangai Subcounty Chief, who represented the CAO at the meeting, pledged to compile a comprehensive report on the parents’ dismissal of the headteacher. He further confirmed that recently transferred teachers would return to the school to support improvements in teaching and learning.

Ruby Ajwika, Coordinating Centre Tutor (CCT) of Amatiburu Trading Centre, representing the District Education Officer (DEO), used the occasion to warn other headteachers to remain receptive to parental concerns to avoid similar incidents.

Daniel Okwany Kizza, LCIII Chairperson for Kangai Subcounty, commended the Oyirogole Chapel Council leaders for taking a bold step to restore education standards at the school.

“This is what community leadership looks like,” Kizza said. “Our children deserve better, and we must protect their future.”

Dickens Obote, LCV District Council representative for Kangai, described the dismissal as a lesson to all government employees in Dokolo who neglect their duties.

“Public service is a trust,” Obote emphasized. “When that trust is broken, communities have every right to demand accountability.”

According to available reports, Peter Abac was previously dismissed from Adwila Modern Primary School before his transfer to Oyirogole Primary School in 2023. His history has since intensified calls for more rigorous vetting of education officials deployed to rural schools.

As the district prepares to deploy a permanent replacement, parents remain hopeful that the change will mark a new chapter for Oyirogole Primary School—one defined by transparency, discipline, and a renewed commitment to academic excellence.
