Mbarara, Uganda – The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, is under pressure to respond after more than 100 secondary school teachers were left stranded at Ntare School in Mbarara following a two-week patriotism training, over non-payment of promised transport refunds.
The affected teachers are part of a group of 1,372 trainees drawn from the Greater Mbarara and Ntungamo regions, claim they were promised Shs300,000 each to facilitate their return home.
However, at least 123 teachers say they were excluded from the payment without explanation and have now spent days stuck at the school premises.
Although 1,145 teachers received certificates during the official pass-out ceremony held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, the unpaid group expressed frustration, citing broken promises and logistical confusion.
The training, themed “Transforming Teachers’ Lives Through Patriotism,” was presided over by President Yoweri Museveni, who praised the initiative and called on teachers to champion national values in their schools and communities.
While the government celebrated the program’s success, the unresolved transport refund issue has overshadowed the ceremony’s impact, raising questions about the planning and management of large-scale government-sponsored trainings.
Efforts to reach the organizers for comment were still ongoing by press time.
