Fresh reports indicate that Maj. Gen. James Birungi and at least 12 other suspects — including both serving and retired senior officers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) — are under intense interrogation over several high-profile assassinations.
Sources reveal that investigators are probing claims that the officers withheld critical intelligence linked to the attacks. The scope of the investigations has reportedly been widened to include the 2021 attempted assassination of Works Minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala and the 2017 murder of former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Among the senior officers currently detained are Maj. Gen. James Birungi, Col. Peter Ahimbisibwe, and Lt. Col. Ephraim Byaruhanga, who serves as the Director of Special Operations in the Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS).
Insiders say Gen. Birungi is being held at Makindye Military Barracks under strict conditions. He is said to be confined alone in a small room, sleeping on a thin mattress, and not permitted to communicate with other suspects.
The ongoing interrogations mark a significant escalation in the government’s efforts to uncover possible insider involvement or negligence in some of Uganda’s most notorious
attacks.
