Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among could soon face a major political setback within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) as pressure mounts for her removal from the party’s top leadership organ over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
Among, who recently lost the race to retain the Speaker’s seat, is now reportedly facing possible investigations under the NRM code of conduct, with party leaders expected to review whether she should continue serving as the Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).
Sources within the ruling party indicate that former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga could be considered to replace Among in the influential position.
The latest revelations were made by newly reappointed Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Norbert Mao, who said there was substantial information regarding alleged abuse of office during Among’s tenure as Speaker of Parliament.
Speaking to journalists, Mao claimed that Among breached procurement and budgetary procedures at Parliament, including the controversial awarding of a Shs3 billion public relations contract to Mama Bukedea FM, a radio station associated with her.
“There was never a call for bids from other radio stations in the country. They just sat down and awarded the Shs3 billion contract to the station,” Mao said.
Mao further questioned the source of Among’s wealth, referring to allegations surrounding her luxurious properties and the widely discussed Rolls Royce vehicle saga.
“As a leader, your expenditure should be proportionate to your income,” Mao stated.
According to Mao, Among’s removal from the Speaker’s office was only the beginning of what he described as “political punishment,” adding that the NRM leadership would now have to decide her fate within the party structure.
“The NRM party will now sit to review her actions in relation to its code of conduct and decide whether or not she should remain serving as Deputy Party Chairperson,” Mao said.
He also revealed that Among was reportedly absent from the latest CEC meeting, suggesting that her standing within the ruling party could already be weakening.
“From what I have seen so far, she was not invited to the last CEC meeting. The writing is on the wall,” Mao added.
Among currently serves as the NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), a position she won after defeating longtime political rival Rebecca Kadaga during previous CEC elections.
The developments are likely to intensify political debate within the ruling party as questions continue to emerge over accountability, internal discipline, and leadership integrity at the highest levels of government.
