NOLONGER AT EASE: Anita Among’s Last Nail in the Coffin to Be Decided in Kyankwanzi

As political attention shifts to Kyankwanzi, fresh speculation has emerged around the future of Anita Annet Among, with insiders suggesting her position could be among the final high-level decisions to be shaped at the ruling party’s strategic retreat.

Among, who currently serves as Speaker of Parliament, holds one of the most influential offices in Uganda’s governance structure.

Her role places her at the center of legislative control, managing parliamentary business and shaping national debate. However, like many powerful positions within the system, her future is closely tied to internal dynamics within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the broader strategic calculations of Yoweri Museveni.

According to ongoing political speculation, Among could be redeployed to the position of Vice President as part of a broader restructuring of power. Such a move would not necessarily signal a fall from influence, but rather a calculated redistribution of authority, maintaining her within the top leadership circle while reducing her direct control over Parliament.

At the same time, questions are being raised about why Norbert Maowas invited in Kyankwanzi for retreat. His presence will be fueled debate about whether he could be positioned for a more central institutional role, including the Speakership.

Analysts suggest that elevating Mao could serve as a strategic effort to broaden political alliances, given his background and links beyond the NRM, while also reinforcing inclusivity within government.

This pattern is not new. The events at Kyankwanzi have historically played a decisive role in shaping Uganda’s political direction. The most notable example remains the political shift involving Amama Mbabazi.

Once one of the most powerful figures in government as both Prime Minister and NRM Secretary General, Mbabazi’s influence declined sharply following the 2014 Kyankwanzi retreat. During that period, party leaders endorsed President Museveni as the sole candidate for the 2016 elections, effectively sidelining internal challengers.

The aftermath was swift. Mbabazi was removed from his party and government positions, eventually breaking ranks to contest against Museveni in 2016. That episode cemented Kyankwanzi’s reputation as a center of political consolidation, where loyalty is reinforced and strategic decisions reshape the balance of power.

It is within this historical context that current developments are being interpreted. Observers point to a familiar pattern: managing influence, preventing dominance by any single figure, and using redeployment rather than outright removal to maintain cohesion within the system.

Additional commentary from Ofwono Opondo has also highlighted that participation in Kyankwanzi activities is not limited to core NRM figures. Leaders from other political backgrounds, including ministers and independents, regularly attend such retreats, reinforcing the idea that Kyankwanzi serves as a broader platform for political alignment rather than exclusion.

If the current speculation were to materialize, the scenario could unfold through a structured process: a high-level retreat sets the political tone, leadership emphasizes unity and alliance-building, and key figures are reassigned to positions that reflect evolving priorities. In such a case, Among could be elevated to Vice President, while a figure like Mao could emerge as a consensus candidate for Speaker.

It is important to note that the Speaker of Parliament is elected by Members of Parliament, not directly appointed. Any such transition would therefore require significant political coordination and majority support within the House.

For now, these developments remain speculative. However, the signals emerging from Kyankwanzi once again highlight its enduring role as a decisive arena in Uganda’s political landscape, where careers are reshaped, alliances are forged, and the direction of leadership is quietly but firmly determined.
