KAMPALA, Uganda — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus has unanimously resolved to support the proposed Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026, signaling a firm stance on safeguarding Uganda’s national interests.
During a high-level meeting held at the Office of the President on Tuesday, 5th May 2026, NRM legislators reaffirmed their commitment to defending the country’s sovereignty, constitutional order, and socio-economic stability.
In a formal resolution issued after the meeting, the caucus emphasized the growing need to protect Uganda from both internal and external pressures in an increasingly complex global environment. Members noted that the proposed legislation is critical in strengthening national security and ensuring that Uganda maintains full control over its governance and development agenda.
The lawmakers also expressed appreciation for the strategic leadership and guidance provided by the President, highlighting the importance of unity and cohesion within the ruling party in addressing national challenges.
The meeting was guided by presentations from the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Attorney General, who outlined the government’s harmonised position on the bill. The caucus agreed that supporting the legislation is essential for preserving Uganda’s independence and reinforcing its institutional framework.
Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, who also serves as Chairperson of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, endorsed the resolution on behalf of the members.
The Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026, is expected to be tabled in Parliament, where it is likely to receive strong backing from NRM legislators
