The National Unity Platform (NUP) is facing an internal political showdown as Kassim Kibirige challenges Waiswa Mufumbiro, the party’s Deputy Spokesperson, for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat.
Kibirige’s candidacy has stirred excitement across the constituency, particularly among youth groups, boda boda riders, market vendors, and local leaders who view him as a genuine representative of grassroots voices.
“I’m Here to Serve, Not to Seek Power” Speaking to journalists, Kibirige expressed confidence in his ability to lead and serve the people of Nakawa East.
He emphasized his deep understanding of the community’s challenges and pledged to focus on:
- Improving infrastructure
- Enhancing healthcare services
- Supporting local businesses
- Empowering youth through vocational and skilling programs
- Promoting transparent and accountable community leadership
“I’m standing to serve my community—creating jobs, improving healthcare, enhancing the education sector, and uplifting the welfare of Nakawa East residents,” Kibirige said. “I want to contribute to the development of our area and ensure our voices are heard in Parliament.”
NUP ticket for Nakawa East is expected to be fiercely competitive, pitting Kibirige, a local son of Nakawa, against Mufumbiro, a seasoned national figure who recently relocated to the constituency to pursue political office.
The dynamic has sparked internal debate. While some party members admire Mufumbiro’s national presence, others question his connection to the constituency, labeling him as an outsider leveraging party influence. In contrast, Kibirige is widely seen as a “homegrown” candidate—young, relatable, and firmly rooted in the community.
“Will NUP choose a local champion or a seasoned outsider with national clout?” one political observer asked.
Analysts say Kibirige’s challenge is a test of NUP’s commitment to internal democracy and its ability to elevate emerging leaders alongside veteran figures.
Who Is Kassim Kibirige?
At just 28 years old, Kibirige Kassim hails from Mutungo Zone 4 in Nakawa. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management at Victoria University. Despite his youth, he has earned recognition for community work and advocacy focused on local development.
He maintains that his political journey is driven by purpose—not personal ambition.
“It’s not about titles. It’s about service,” he said.
As Nakawa East heads into what could be one of the most closely watched internal races within NUP, attention is now on the party’s vetting committee. Their decision will determine whether NUP fields a seasoned political figure or backs a youthful, grassroots-driven contender in the 2026 general election.
The contest between Kibirige and Mufumbiro is already generating interest beyond Nakawa, drawing attention from political watchers across Kampala and beyond.
