MBARARA, Uganda – The National Unity Platform (NUP)’s Hon. Peter Mpaka, who was the party’s flag bearer for the Mbarara City North MP seat, has withdrawn from the race and officially quit the party, citing what he described as “empty promises” and a lack of logistical support.

Mpaka, who had already been duly nominated by the Electoral Commission, said he was left with no option but to step down because he lacked the financial and logistical capacity to run a credible campaign. He noted that NUP had painted a “glossy picture” during the nomination process, assuring candidates of facilitation, only to abandon them later.

“Peter Mpaka who was the NUP flag bearer for Mbarara City North says he has quit the race, and could hopefully join PFF.
The party painted a glossy picture with promises to support us, but has now abandoned us,” he said.

He further explained that he had been promised logistical support by the party, only for the President, Robert Kyagulanyi, and Secretary General, Lewis Rubongoya, to later reveal that there was nothing to offer to any candidate.

“Without the necessary logistics, it is impossible to run a meaningful campaign,” Mpaka stated.

He revealed that he has formally written to the NUP President, Robert Kyagulanyi, notifying him of his decision to withdraw. A similar notice has also been sent to the Electoral Commission, informing them that he will not contest for the Mbarara City North MP seat on the NUP ticket.

Mpaka confirmed that he has discarded his NUP membership entirely and is now considering joining another opposition formation, including the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), as he evaluates his next political step.

The former candidate also issued a stern warning to NUP supporters spreading allegations that he was bribed by the ruling NRM to quit the race. He dismissed the claims as false and defamatory.

“I want to caution those who are quick to brand anyone a sell-out. I was not bought by NRM. I withdrew because I had no funds and the party failed to support its candidates. NUP gave us empty promises,” he emphasized.

Mpaka’s departure adds to the growing internal criticism within NUP, with several aspirants accusing the party leadership of poor coordination and failure to support candidates in key constituencies.
