Mulago National Referral Hospital has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting a kidney transplant, with both the recipient and the donor recently discharged. Dr. Rosemary Byanyima, the acting executive director of Mulago Hospital, confirmed the positive outcome and stated that both the recipient and the donor are doing well following the surgery.
A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure where a healthy kidney from either a living or deceased donor is implanted into a recipient whose kidneys are no longer functioning properly. The successful outcome reflects the hospital’s commitment to advancing medical procedures and providing essential healthcare services.
Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng announced last year that Mulago Hospital had conducted its first kidney transplant on December 20, 2023. The recipient had been on dialysis for two years prior to the transplant. Dialysis is a medical procedure used to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are unable to perform this function adequately.
The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering and removing waste, minerals, and fluid from the blood by producing urine. With the success of the kidney transplant, Mulago Hospital adds a significant achievement to its healthcare services, offering new hope to patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease.
Currently, Mulago Hospital administers approximately 1,082 dialysis sessions annually for patients with end-stage kidney disease.
