The United States Embassy in Kampala has issued a security alert to American citizens in Uganda as the Electoral Commission prepares to nominate presidential candidates on September 23 and 24, 2025.
According to the Embassy, the nomination events will be accompanied by rolling road closures, checkpoints, barriers, and a heavy security presence across Kampala and parts of Wakiso District. The measures are aimed at controlling traffic and managing large crowds expected during the two-day exercise.
The alert specifically mentions areas likely to be affected, including Independence Park in Kololo, Katwe Grounds, Kaala Playground in Nateete, and the Lweza-Lubowa stretch along the Old Entebbe Road leading to Entebbe Airport.
American citizens in Uganda are advised to exercise caution and take the following steps:
* Monitor local media for updates.
* Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
* Keep a low profile.
* Notify family and friends of their safety.
* Be aware of their surroundings.
* Carry proper identification, including a valid passport and Ugandan visa.
The Embassy also urged citizens to review their personal security plans and make use of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time updates.
The advisory comes as security agencies step up deployment ahead of the high-profile nominations, with both President Yoweri Museveni and opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) expected to be among the candidates.
It’s important to note that President Museveni will be nominated on the 23rd of September 2025 while the National Unity Platform’s Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine will get nominated on the following day, 24th September.
