South Sudan Government Assures Safety of Nimule-Juba Highway Amid Rebel Threat

Wednesday, October 18, 2023

The government of South Sudan has assured Ugandan traders that the Nimule-Juba highway and Nimule Town are secure for business, following threats from a group known as the Joint Command Council. This rebel outfit, led by Mr. John Cde Aborcup Akuer, had declared a siege on Nimule Town, which is located on the border near Elegu Town in Uganda.

Amuru Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Stephen Odong Latek, reported that they had engaged with South Sudan authorities after receiving the warnings and have since been assured of adequate security and safety. The South Sudan government clarified that the warnings were issued by an isolated group of bandits using social media to create fear and insecurity.

According to Mr. Latek, South Sudan authorities have taken measures to respond to any potential actions that could impact travelers between Elegu and Juba. The Magwi County Commissioner, Mr. David Remson Otto, also emphasized that security on the highway has been reinforced, and they are treating such threats seriously.

The Joint Command Council had claimed to have attacked a military base inside Nimule Town and blocked all vehicles from using the Nimule-Juba highway. They warned that any vehicle traveling on Nimule Road would be considered a concealed carrier of military cargo for President Kiir and Riak Machar’s military.

In response, the UPDF 4th Division spokesman, Maj Telesphor Turyamumanya, stated that Uganda’s territorial integrity is protected, and the army is on high alert to defend against any violations. He reassured that borders are safe and secure, and both soldiers and civilians are ready for action if necessary.
