UPDF Denies Involvement in Rutsuru Conflict

Monday, February 19, 2024

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has issued a statement addressing allegations made by Mr. Jules Mulumba regarding their presence in Rutsuru. Mulumba had claimed that the UPDF was operating in the area, but the UPDF has refuted these claims, asserting that they are false.

In his attempt to substantiate his claims, Mulumba utilized photographs depicting UPDF forces, which were actually part of the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF). These images were taken during a deployment of Uganda’s contingent to the EACRF in the Tsengero general areas along the Bunagana – Rutshuru to Goma Axis, and not in Sake as suggested by Mulumba.

The UPDF emphasizes that their involvement in conflicts is limited to regional peace efforts and not internal conflicts. Therefore, they maintain that they have no reason to be engaged in any internal conflict in Rutsuru.

The statement from the UPDF aims to clarify their position and correct any misinformation regarding their presence in Rutsuru. They stress the importance of accurate reporting and urge the public to rely on credible sources for information regarding military activities.

The UPDF’s response comes amidst heightened tensions in the region and serves to uphold transparency and accountability in their operations. They reiterate their commitment to regional peace and stability while affirming their adherence to international laws and protocols.
