Kitagwenda, Uganda – The construction of Kanara Seed Secondary School in Kitagwenda District has been suspended following repeated delays and concerns over substandard workmanship.
The Shs 2.6 billion project was awarded to Skyworth Technology Services Limited on January 29, 2023, with an 18-month completion timeline.
The school, designed to significantly expand access to quality secondary education, includes six classroom blocks, an administration block, ventilated improved pit latrines, teachers’ houses, a kitchen, two science laboratories, a playground, a multipurpose hall, and an ICT library.
Although the project was initially expected to be completed by August 2024, the deadline was extended by six months after the contractor cited challenges in sourcing construction materials.
Despite this extension, several key works remained unfinished, including painting of classroom blocks, equipping laboratories, and completion of teachers’ houses, latrines, and the kitchen.
In response to the delays, Kitagwenda District Chief Administrative Officer Moses R.K. Dalili ordered the contractor to vacate the site, citing failure to meet agreed timelines and quality standards.
“The contractor has not met the set timelines, and the workmanship does not meet the standards expected for a public project of this magnitude,” Mr. Dalili said, emphasizing the district’s commitment to accountability and quality in its development projects.
The suspension has left students, parents, and local leaders anxiously awaiting updates. Authorities are now exploring measures to ensure the school is completed efficiently and to acceptable standards.
