Traffic Partially Restored as Karuma—Kamdini Detour Opens to Light Vehicles

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the completion of a temporary detour at the damaged section of the Karuma—Kamdini Road, bringing partial relief to motorists who have faced days of traffic disruption. The road section was severely affected last week after heavy rains caused damage to the main carriageway, forcing authorities to halt direct traffic flow.

According to the Ministry, the newly constructed detour will officially open tomorrow, Monday 1st December 2025, at 11:00am.

In a statement, officials said:

“Beginning tomorrow… light-traffic vehicles including buses, medium trucks, vans and saloon cars will be allowed to safely cross the section using the newly completed detour.”

However, heavy trucks and trailers are still restricted from using the route.

“All heavy vehicles shall continue to divert through the Karuma–Olwiyo–Anaka route both from Kampala to Gulu and from Gulu to Kampala until further notice,” the Ministry noted.

With the detour now operational, engineers will immediately begin restoration works on the damaged main carriageway, which remains closed for full reconstruction.

Motorists have been urged to drive carefully and adhere to traffic management guidelines.

“Motorists are advised to proceed with caution and follow all traffic management instructions including the 30km/hr speed limit along the detour,” the update reads.

The road disruption began earlier in the week when a section of the carriageway weakened due to flooding, prompting emergency engineers to move in and create a temporary passage to keep traffic flowing.

The Ministry says it will provide further updates as repairs progress.
