The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has launched a free medical camp at Chahafi Health Centre IV in Chahafi Town Council, drawing a large number of patients from surrounding communities.
The initiative, which started on Tuesday, 2nd December, aims to improve access to essential healthcare services and enable residents to seek treatment for various illnesses. The UPDF medical team described the turnout as highly encouraging.
Speaking to our reporter, Col. Dr. Norbert Kabugo, who is heading the UPDF medical team at Chahafi Health Centre IV, said the camp will run for six days. The services being offered include malaria testing and treatment, dental care, midwifery, minor surgeries, and health education.
He noted that the majority of cases recorded so far are malaria-related.
Dr. John Bosco Nkurunziza, the In-Charge of Chahafi Health Centre IV, commended the UPDF medical team for extending health services to the community.
He said the gesture demonstrates patriotism and urged residents to take advantage of the services, emphasizing that UPDF doctors are professionally trained like any other medical practitioners.
Dr. Nkurunziza further attributed the high malaria burden in the area to its terrain, which is characterised by swampy, water-logged zones that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Residents who turned up for the services thanked the UPDF for bringing healthcare closer to the people. They noted that the medical camp has helped many who would otherwise struggle to access treatment.
They also expressed gratitude to the NRM government for nurturing a disciplined army that contributes to community development and strengthens the relationship between the military and civilians.
