US El Salvadorian Criminal Kilmar Abrego Declines Being Deported to Uganda- Fears Torture

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national at the center of a high-profile U.S. immigration case, has refused plans to deport him to Uganda, saying he fears torture and persecution if sent there.

Abrego Garcia, who has no ties to Uganda, argued through his lawyers that being relocated there would expose him to grave danger. He added that Uganda’s track record of human rights violations, including cases of torture and arbitrary detention, makes it an unsafe option.

Court documents show that Uganda was just one of more than twenty countries where Abrego Garcia said he feared possible persecution. U.S. immigration officials dismissed this as excessive, but his legal team insisted that Uganda, in particular, posed real risks.

His lawyers have filed motions to reopen his case, pressing for a safer alternative country where he would not face detention or the threat of being returned to El Salvador. They argue that deporting him to Uganda would effectively deny him protection guaranteed under international law.

Uganda has often been flagged in international reports for heavy-handed security operations, restrictions on dissent, and incidents of torture. For Abrego Garcia and his supporters, this record strengthens the case against sending him there.
