DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has arrived in Dar es Salaam ahead of a crucial CAF Executive Committee (ExCo) meeting that is expected to determine the fate of the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The high-level meeting comes amid widespread reports that the 2027 AFCON tournament, scheduled to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, could be postponed.
According to reports published by The Guardian on Wednesday, CAF is considering pushing the tournament to 2028 due to concerns over the preparedness of the three East African nations. The possible postponement would also allow the continental football governing body to fast-track the launch of the Africa Nations League — a new competition set to replace the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Motsepe, who is expected to address the media after the ExCo meeting, will outline the resolutions reached by CAF’s top decision-making body.
Speculation about a postponement intensified after the chairperson of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Nicholas Musonye, was quoted by AFP indicating that Kenya would be comfortable with the tournament being moved forward. Musonye reportedly noted that rescheduling the event could shield it from potential disruptions linked to Kenya’s general elections scheduled for August 2027.
The upcoming Executive Committee meeting is therefore seen as pivotal in shaping the future of the region’s historic joint AFCON bid — the first of its kind in East Africa.
Further updates are expected following CAF’s official communication after the meeting.
