Freetown, Sierra Leone – December 7, 2023: Former President Ernest Bai Koroma has been summoned by the Sierra Leone police for questioning as part of their investigation into the recent failed coup attempt. Koroma has expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation, stating that he “maintains an open mind and stands ready to support the police investigations to the fullest.”
The failed coup took place on November 26th, when gunmen attacked a military barracks, a prison, and other locations in the capital city of Freetown. Over 20 people were killed and approximately 2,200 inmates were freed in the attack, which the government has declared an attempt to overthrow the current administration.
According to Information Minister Chernor Bah, the failed coup was primarily led by former President Koroma’s bodyguards. However, Koroma himself publicly condemned the violence shortly after the incident occurred.
To date, 71 individuals have been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation, including 45 serving military officers, 7 serving police officers, and 13 civilians.
President Koroma has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation and emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law. He has also urged the public to remain calm during this sensitive time.
