Gertrude Nabukeera, a prominent fisherwoman known as “Maama Sili,” has made history as the first papal dame from Masaka diocese. The historic appointment was celebrated during a thanksgiving and introduction Mass at Bumangi Catholic Parish in Kalangala district. Nabukeera, along with two knights, Yozeefu Luswata and Dick Richard Muwanga, was presented to the congregation in the ceremonial uniform worn by papal knights and dames.
Papal knights and dames are honorary squads of the pontiff, recognized for their loyalty and exemplary services to the church. The appointments are made by the pope in appreciation of individuals’ contributions to the church, and they serve as ambassadors at the parish level.
Nabukeera, who owns 80 fishing boats and employs 500 fishermen at Nakatiba landing site, expressed her overwhelming feelings about the appointment. Despite the role not coming with a monetary gain, she emphasized that it would not overshadow her responsibilities in her family, church, and community.
The new papal dame has been actively involved in community development, contributing to the construction and renovation of Catholic churches, donating boats for church missions, and receiving recognition for her exceptional work in the fishing industry.
The last papal appointments in Masaka diocese occurred decades ago, making Nabukeera’s recognition a significant event. The excitement among parishioners and community members reflects the pride and optimism associated with her newfound status.
Local leaders, such as Rajab Ssemakula, the Kalangala district chairperson, see the potential boost to tourism resulting from Nabukeera’s papal ambassador status. They anticipate increased engagement with her at national and international levels, further highlighting her contributions to both the church and the community.
