As Kabale Diocese commemorates a century of spiritual and societal contributions, former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda extends congratulations, acknowledging the pivotal role the diocese has played in education, healthcare, and various social and developmental projects. The milestone celebration marks 100 years of Our Lady of Good Shepherd, specifically within the Rushoroza Deanery.

Rugunda, in a tweet on January 7, 2024, expressed his congratulations, commending Kabale Diocese for its steadfast commitment to uplifting the community through multifaceted initiatives. The former Premier also took the opportunity to extend gratitude to Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, the current Bishop, and his predecessors for their exemplary leadership, which has facilitated the diocese’s commendable contributions to society.

Throughout its rich history, Kabale Diocese has been under the guidance of several bishops, including Rt. Rev. Gervase Nkalanga, Rt. Rev. Barnabas Halem’Imana, and Rt. Rev. Robert Mary Gay. The diocese, established on April 17, 1966, carved out of Mbarara Diocese, has been a source of spiritual nourishment and community development.

Rushoroza Deanery, situated in Kabale District, encompasses four parishes: Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral Parish, Our Lady of Assumption Rwanyena Parish, Holy Family Buhara Parish, and Christ the King Parish Kabale. The vibrant celebrations mark a century of faith, growth, and service within these parishes.

Kabale Diocese’s journey began with the appointment of Rev. Bishop Gervasius Placidus Nkalanga as the Apostolic Administrator in 1966. Three years later, Bishop Emeritus Barnabas Halem’Imana became the first native Residential Bishop, contributing significantly to the diocese’s foundation and growth. His retirement in 1994 marked a transition, with Bishop Emeritus Robert Mary Gay taking on the leadership role until his retirement in 2003.

The current Bishop, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, ordained in 2003, has continued the legacy of service and spiritual guidance. Kabale Diocese, a suffragan diocese within the Archdiocese of Mbarara since 1999, remains a beacon of faith, community development, and commitment to the well-being of its members.
