Ntare School has commenced the construction of a Shs1.2 billion perimeter wall fence to ensure the safety of both students and staff. Headmaster Mr. Saul Rwampororo emphasized the necessity for such security measures in light of changing times, expressing concern about potential intruders and wrongdoers that may pose harm to the school community.

During a meeting with the school’s key stakeholders, Mr. Rwampororo highlighted the historical significance of this initiative, noting that Ntare School did not have any fencing in the past. He underscored the transformation in the school’s surroundings, with the growth of neighboring establishments such as bars, necessitating the need for enhanced security.

Referring to a tragic attack on Lhubihira Secondary School in the Kasese District last year, allegedly by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), resulting in the loss of 25 students, Mr. Rwampororo stressed the importance of fortifying the school’s security measures.

“The town has grown big. Now Ntare is surrounded by people who we do not understand. There is a time when you find students losing property of all nature. Let us forego that history and construct a fence,” Mr. Rwampororo urged.

The three-kilometer-long wall will encircle all the school land, offering comprehensive protection. Nathan Mugume, Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), explained that the decision to construct the perimeter wall was reached during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June the previous year. Other resolutions from the AGM included installing cameras in the school, establishing a bakery, purchasing a car for the headmaster, and constructing the perimeter wall.

While acknowledging opposition from some alumni to the wall construction, Mr. Mugume emphasized the importance of prioritizing the security of students and staff. He assured parents that the construction project would not lead to an increase in school fees.

Apollo Kashanku, Chairman of the Ntare School Old Boys Association, voiced support for the project but emphasized the importance of balancing security measures with students’ freedom. James Mwesigye, the Mbarara Resident City Commissioner, acknowledged the difficulties faced in securing the school due to numerous porous entries and exits.
