A total of 749,254 candidates from 15,859 centers (schools) registered for the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) in 2023, marking a decrease from 832,654 in 2022. Among these, 501,602 (66.9%) were Universal Primary Education (UPE) beneficiaries, while 247,652 (33.1%) were Non-UPE candidates.

Notably, the number of candidates in Division U is high, standing at 88,269 (10.4%). This raises concerns, particularly in districts like Kibuku (31.5%), Madi Okollo (31.5%), Dokolo (28.9%), Kween (28.4%), and Namisindwa (28.9%), where percentages exceed the national average. Understanding the causes and addressing them is crucial to prevent an increase in school drop-out statistics.

In 2023, a higher proportion of candidates passed in Division 3 and above, maintaining a comparable performance to 2022. Division U, awarded to candidates who fail to reach the minimum level for at least a Division 4, poses a challenge as they are ineligible for admission to Senior 1 class.

The Board has raised concerns about impostors targeting Head teachers and School Directors, claiming to enhance grades or remove schools from suspicion of examination malpractice. UNEB cautions examination centers, school directors, and the public against involvement with such fraudsters.
