Serere District Local Government is set to dismiss approximately 10 civil servants for alleged extended absenteeism from their duties. Among the affected officers are the agricultural engineer, parish chiefs, and the district commercial officer, who recently returned from a mission in Ethiopia. The officers reportedly abandoned their assigned responsibilities for personal engagements, prompting the district to consider termination.
Serere Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Richard Ssajjabi Bukone, disclosed that despite repeated warnings, the officers continued to neglect their duties. The district sought guidance from the Solicitor General on the proper course of action to address the matter. Bukone emphasized the need for services in the district and expressed concern that these officers were drawing salaries without fulfilling their job responsibilities.
Serere Woman MP, Hellen Adoa Abeku, supported the decision, citing absenteeism as a contributing factor to poor service delivery in the district. In a similar incident in 2023, the Acting District Commercial Officer, Simon Opolot, and his wife were removed from the payroll after leaving for Ethiopia without proper communication. Opolot, now back, expressed a desire to reclaim his job, citing a lack of communication and an expectation of returning before his leave expired.
