Sarah Aguti Nyangkori has emerged as the sole candidate for the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) in the Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament By-Election. Nyangkori, a familiar face in the political landscape, was officially endorsed during the District delegate’s conference held at St. Francis Xavier Vocational School in Dokolo.
The conference, attended by a gathering of 204 delegates from across the District, witnessed Nyangkori’s uncontested nomination. Anna Okwir and Josephine Acen Atia, who had initially shown interest in the candidacy, gracefully withdrew their bids, paving the way for Nyangkori’s unanimous selection.
Speaking on her decision to step down, Anna Okwir urged UPC supporters to throw their weight behind Nyangkori, emphasizing the need to garner support from all political fronts. “It’s not only UPC going to vote, so we should know that we need all these other parties to vote for us,” Okwir remarked, highlighting the importance of collaboration and respect in the political arena.
Chris Ongom, the UPC’s vice chairman for Northern Uganda, reiterated the democratic principles upheld by the party, noting that the flag bearer is elected through a transparent process by the district delegate conference.
In her address to the delegates, Nyangkori pledged to serve the people of Dokolo irrespective of their political leanings, with a strong focus on improving healthcare and education—a promise that resonated well with the audience.
William Onyanga, the Dokolo district UPC registrar, underscored the significance of bolstering UPC’s representation in Parliament ahead of the 2026 General Election, emphasizing the need to secure and safeguard the party’s votes.
Echoes of past electoral events, such as the Oyam By-election last year, loomed large in the discussions, with party leaders stressing the importance of vigilance in protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
UPC’s nomination of Nyangkori marks the third candidate announcement for the upcoming By-election, following nominations by the NRM and FDC. As the political landscape in Dokolo continues to unfold, all eyes are on Nyangkori as she navigates the electoral terrain, carrying the hopes and aspirations of the UPC party faithfuls.
