Kigezi Mourns the Passing of Business Tycoon Jonathan Kirasha

The Kigezi region is in mourning following the passing of renowned businessman Jonathan Kirasha, who was instrumental in the coffee trade industry. The news of his death, announced on various radio stations on February 20, has left hundreds of people shocked and saddened.

Described as a pillar of economic development and a champion of trade in Muhanga town council, Jonathan Kirasha’s legacy extends beyond his contributions to the coffee trade in Kigezi and Ankole regions. He was known for mentoring many individuals, including notable figures like Kampala tycoon Apollo Nyegamehe, also known as Aponye.




Jonathan Kirasha’s son, Brian Kirasha, shared that his father had a long history in business, starting at the young age of 14 by selling coffee before diversifying into other produce and transportation ventures. His business acumen made him prominent not only in Uganda but also across neighboring countries.




Local leaders, including former Minister of State for Regional Cooperation Dr. Philemon Mateke and Rukiga District LCV chairperson Mr. Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, praised Kirasha as a humble and hardworking businessman who inspired many in the region. Dr. Mateke recalled Kirasha’s generosity and role in promoting both local and cross-border trade.




Mr. Mbabazi Kakwerere hailed Kirasha as a pillar of economic development and highlighted his efforts in establishing coffee processing factories, which provided employment and financial empowerment to hundreds of people.

Dr. Sylvia Alineitwe, deputy managing director at National Water and Sewerage Corporation, expressed sadness over Kirasha’s passing, describing him as a mentor and supporter of the Rukiga community.

Born on December 3, 1947, in Nyamishenyi Kandogo, Bukinda sub-county, Jonathan Kirasha is survived by 17 children, 32 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. His funeral arrangements include a church service at St. Andrews Bukoto followed by burial in Muhanga, Rukiga district.
