Police in the Kyoga East region made arrests on Monday, February 19, apprehending the headmaster and director of studies of Kagwara Seed School in Serere District. The arrests were made in connection with the alleged theft of 15 computers, which were purchased by the government to enhance ICT education in the school.
Additionally, the director of studies was also taken into custody and is currently being detained at the regional Police offices in Soroti city. The swift action by law enforcement authorities underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the commitment to uphold accountability within educational institutions.
Serere District Police Commander, Saulo Musasizi, refrained from commenting on the matter, directing inquiries to the region headquarters in Soroti, which spearheaded the arrest operation. Acting Police spokesperson for the Elgon region, Robert Tukei, confirmed the arrests but withheld specific details, citing ongoing investigations.
Tukei emphasized that the Police have five suspects in custody, including the headmaster and director of studies, but declined to disclose further information to avoid compromising the investigative process. The alleged theft has resulted in the loss of 21 computers used by students for their studies, raising concerns about the disruption of educational activities.
Emmanuel Opio, an area district councillor, shed light on the incident, revealing that the disappearance of the computers was discovered in January after the vandalism of a laboratory window. Following a thorough investigation, including the apprehension of a watchman who had absconded, the Police proceeded to arrest the headmaster, director of studies, and four other individuals from the community.
Opio expressed disappointment over the situation, highlighting the impact on students’ access to computer skills despite the government’s provision of brand new computers. The arrests serve as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding public resources and ensuring their proper utilization for the benefit of the community.
In response to inquiries, Tukei assured that the Police would provide further updates to the media on Wednesday.
