FDC Members in Dokolo District Endorse Akena Obote for Presidency

Hundreds of supporters and influential leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Dokolo District have withdrawn their support for their party leader, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, and instead thrown their weight behind Jimmy Akena Obote of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections in a surprising turn of events.

The endorsement of Akena by the Dokolo FDC members marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the district. Additionally, some members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party have also joined the exodus, relinquishing their party affiliations and pledging allegiance to the UPC.

Key figures among the defectors include Bosco Owida, the spokesperson for FDC in Dokolo, Florence Awor, the district party treasurer, and several constituency chairpersons and mobilizers. They cite the belief that the UPC is the party that can lead them to prosperity as their primary reason for the switch.

The official welcoming of the defectors into the UPC fold took place during a mobilization rally held at Angwecibange Primary School playground in Dokolo Town, underscoring the growing support for Akena’s leadership among former FDC members.

Addressing the gathering, Akena expressed gratitude for the show of solidarity and reiterated his commitment to serving all Ugandans irrespective of their political backgrounds. He emphasized the importance of unity within the party and assured members of his unwavering support for the chosen candidate in the forthcoming elections.

Akena, who is the son of the late Apollo Milton Obote, founder of the UPC, highlighted the need for collective action to achieve the party’s objectives. He emphasized that the party’s agenda is geared towards benefiting all citizens of Uganda, regardless of their political affiliations.

Furthermore, Akena urged party leaders to uphold inclusivity and avoid discrimination within the party ranks. He emphasized that every member, regardless of their tenure or history with the party, deserves equal rights and opportunities.

The UPC leader outlined plans for extensive mobilization efforts across the country leading up to the 2026 elections. He stated that the party’s mobilization drive is already underway, with visits to various districts and the establishment of party offices in strategic locations.

Akena affirmed his dedication to the cause, asserting that the party’s mobilization efforts will continue unabated until the conclusion of the 2026 electoral cycle. He reiterated his commitment to supporting the party’s flag bearer and ensuring that every member feels valued and included in the party’s activities and decision-making processes.
