KISORO, Uganda — Students from Metropolitan International University recently completed a 7km walking march to commemorate the legacy of Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, the founder of the university. The march covered the distance from the university grounds in Kamonyi village, Kamonyi ward, Southern Division Kisoro Municipality, to her ancestral home in Nyakabingo village, Chahi Subcounty, Kisoro District.
Fred Turyasingura, Deputy Mr. Campus, Kobusingye Susan, a finalist, Uwintaye Fortunate, the Finance Minister, and Nsengeyunva Erick, also a finalist, all paid tribute to Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke. They praised her significant contributions to education, particularly her support through bursaries and sponsorships for students.
The Guild President, Gad Nizeyimana of the Metropolitan International University Kisoro main campus, revealed that Minister Sarah had done everything within her power to promote equality and called upon the government to continue where she left off.
Senior Lecturer in Journalism and Media Studies, Anthony Tumwine, lauded Minister Sarah as a compassionate and respectful leader. “Metropolitan has lost a mother to both students and staff. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” Tumwine remarked.
Dean of Students Tumwehisye Yosam assured students that they would continue their studies to honor the legacy of the university’s founder. He also called on the government, led by HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, to support students who were under Minister Sarah’s bursary scheme by providing scholastic materials, medical care, and livelihood development.
In mourning her death, all university activities, except for admitting new students, have been suspended for four days, Yosam added.
