Uganda Christian University (UCU) unveiled new graduation gowns to replace traditional black ones and announced a dress code for parents attending the last ceremony.

(Mukono) – Uganda Christian University (UCU) has unveiled new graduation gowns ahead of the second edition of its 25th graduation, aiming to modernize and differentiate academic attire. During an unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Professor John Kitayimbwa, the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, introduced the new attire as a departure from what he called the “colonial era” of black gowns.

Kitayimbwa explained that black gowns have become too widely used, from universities to institutions offering short courses, and even at kindergarten graduations. He expressed that the new gowns reflect a more fitting representation for UCU students who dedicate years to specialized studies. “It is inappropriate for someone who has spent four years studying to wear a gown that is similar to those used at kindergarten graduations. The graduation gown has become the most abused symbol of education,” Kitayimbwa said.

The new design, predominantly blue with unique variations for different faculties, will be worn exclusively by UCU graduates, helping to restore the significance of academic gowns. Prices remain the same, making the updated gowns accessible to students.

UCU guild president, Agira Birungi, praised the initiative as both necessary and well timed, emphasizing that the distinct gowns set UCU graduates apart.

The table below provides details on key elements of the new gown:

Element Description
Main Color Blue
Variation Color variations by faculty
Cost No change from previous gowns
Availability Exclusively at UCU

A total of 1,165 candidates, including 625 female and 540 male students, graduated on Friday, October 24, 2024. UCU spokesperson Harriet Adongo confirmed this was the second part of the university’s 25th graduation ceremony, where candidates from various disciplines received degrees, diplomas, and certificates. She stated that all transcripts and certificates would be available for collection on the same day, allowing graduates a smoother transition into the workforce.

The ceremony was officiated by UCU Chancellor and Church of Uganda Archbishop, Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, with Graham Yoko, CEO of Accelerated Education Enterprise, as the guest of honor. The event was part of a series of activities, including a public lecture on October 23 and a commissioning service on October 24.

Kitayimbwa also announced a dress code policy for parents and guardians attending the graduation, urging them to dress decently in line with the university’s Christian values. He emphasized that the institution would not permit access to parents or guardians who did not adhere to the dress code, underscoring UCU’s commitment to maintaining its Christian image.

“We are here to maintain our image, and we shall not allow in those parents or guardians with indecent dress code,” he stated, reinforcing the university’s stance on decorum.
