(Kampala) – The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has started urgent repairs on the Mabira section of the Kampala-Jinja Highway, a critical route connecting Uganda’s capital to the eastern region and beyond.
The roadworks, which commenced on Saturday, November 23, 2024, will cover a one-kilometer stretch and are scheduled to last two weeks. UNRA spokesperson Allan Sempebwa stated that the repairs are necessary to address the deteriorating road surface.
“It’s a 1km section secluded for repairs. We expect the works to be completed by December 7, 2024,” Sempebwa explained.
During this period, traffic will be restricted to one lane, which is expected to cause significant delays for motorists using the highway. To ease congestion, UNRA has advised drivers to consider alternative routes.
Recommended Alternative Routes | Details |
---|---|
Mukono–Kyetume–Katosi–Kisoga–Nyenga/Njeru Road | Suitable for all motorists traveling to Jinja |
Njeru–Kayunga–Mukono/Kalagi–Gayaza Road | Recommended for light vehicles traveling to Kampala |
UNRA has assured road users that traffic police and the project safety team will be stationed on-site to assist travelers and maintain order during the maintenance works.
In a public notice issued on November 22, UNRA emphasized that the repairs aim to enhance road safety and comfort. The Kampala-Jinja Highway is a vital trade route, supporting the movement of goods, services, and people between Kampala and Kenya, while also connecting Uganda’s eastern regions.
The highway passes through Mabira Forest, a significant ecological and tourism asset. This proximity underscores the importance of balancing infrastructure improvements with environmental sustainability. Officials warn that any degradation of Mabira Forest could impact tourism, disrupt local livelihoods, and harm environmental health.
The Kampala-Jinja Highway remains a cornerstone of Uganda’s economy and its role in the East African Community’s regional trade.
UNRA has urged the public to exercise patience and follow recommended travel routes to minimize disruptions as roadworks continue.
Motorists are encouraged to stay updated through official channels and cooperate with traffic authorities at the site.
